Send me a made-up fic title and I'll tell you what I would write to go with it
"Homophrosyne"
Tagging:Â @trublu2u@burningpeachpuppy@upsteadlogic@noxytopy@kmc1989
Companion piece to Little Changes & The Last Time
âItâs homophrosyne â The Ancient Greek term which means two people feeling or thinking alike.â  OA had told Stuart once upon a time as they stood next to the bomb disposal van watching you get reamed out by your boss. Itâs not the first time itâs happened, it wonât the last. In fact Stuartâs sure heâs going to suffer the same fate when he gets back to the JOC because like you he went off book. âThatâs you and Sasha, it must be nice to find someone who gets you like that.â
This was after OA's girlfriend Hanna had left for Delaware, the younger man was still feeling the loss acutely. He had wanted to try long distance, she had known it wouldn't last, not with a sick father to care for so she had ended it. His dating life afterwards had been a mix of false starts after that, because noone could contend with the woman he'd loved.
âItâs terrifying.â Stuart remembers telling the OA. âBecause you know the logic behind the things they do and you canât argue against it.â
It has been that way since the very beginning.
Itâs the reason Stuart knows when he unlocks the door to the home the two of you share that heâs going to find you gone and your wedding ring on the kitchen table. Heâs known you were going to leave him since you got the diagnosis. In your eyes you have nothing to offer him, heâs still young enough to have a family, to enjoy it. You just need to get out of his way.
The thing is Stuart doesnât want a family with anyone else, if he has one he wants it to be with you.
Heâs surprised to hear music when he enters the house. Itâs loud, something with so much bass it feels like itâs vibrating through the walls. He takes the stairs two at a time because thereâs an apprehension in his chest, this is the type of music you listen to when you donât want to feel and he doesnât like where that thought leads him. He finds you in the babyâs room, the one with the yellow walls and the white crib.
In the early days of trying, the two of you had gotten overexcited. Youâd been so sure it was going to happen that youâd created this space for your baby.
âManifest destiny am I right?â You had said while he put together the crib and you sorted through the unisex baby clothes.
The doors been closed on this space ever since youâd learned you wouldnât be bringing home a child. Neither of you could bear to look at it.
Now that door is open and the fresh scent of paint assails his nostrils.
When he steps into that room, his heart breaks just a little because he sees it for what it is, an ending to a dream. The cuddly toys that lined the shelves have been shoved into trash bags, with donation labels affixed to them. The crib has been taken down, packed away tidily alongside of the bags. Two of the four walls are now sage green, the tiny little cartoon sheep that you had painted together with a stencil have disappeared under the fresh coat. Thereâs an anguish in his chest, he feels it so acutely that it makes his eyes sting.
He understands the message. If you stay you canât be around this stuff, theyâre just reminders of your inadequacy as a woman, you need to start fresh.
You tense when he puts his hands gently on your shoulders, his lips brushing lightly over the back of your head.
âWhat will it be?â He asks you, his voice a little rough.
âI donât know.â You say quietly before gesturing at the trash bags. âI just know it canât be that.â

JoC - Chapter 5
Elliott was staring at the ceiling.
Again.
He felt so...sad? Empty? Scared?
He didnât even knowâŠ
The kids were in school and he wished they werenât. He wished Ayleen was here and they could talk about fishes or go to the aquarium together. He wished Ephraim was here and they would talk about frogs or go to the library and would read together. The boy was fiercely intelligent and found so much joy in reading young science books, explaining facts to him he had just learned. A wonderful child. Both of them. Wonderful children. As no doubt would be their third.
Their third.
Elliott pressed his hands on his face, tears welling.
He was so scared. In this terrible moment, when his very mind seemed to fail him, when his mental strength, his resolve that had kept him going through so much hardship in the past seemed to just fail him! While the second pregnancy had gone without any major incidents, they had said afterwards that there had been some tissue damaged. Another pregnancy had been deemed incredibly unlikely which had suited them just fine then. The fact that there now was one was...daunting in so many ways.
Elliott got up, rubbing his face, trying to make himself move. He knew there was little point to him just lying there. He needed to get out of the house.

Stockton's Young Slo-Be should have lived long enough to be a star. He already rapped like one before he was murdered, aged just 29, in August last year.
Instead, we get the life half-lived, the music cut off somewhere on its ascent, the peak hidden just beyond the next bend. Against a life, it's scant consolation.
Yet what music it was. At its best: raw and magnetic and mesmerising in a way that so much music fails to be. More should be written about it. Slo-Be's last album alone had moments where his powers as a rapper reached new heights. 'Hoodstar' plays out like a whirlpool- an artist circling around a ruin that he knew could be his own and rapping like it. Then there's 'Blast It'- somehow more still and yet even more desperate. Its title lyric sounds like a resignation to constant peril. In the verses, the betrayals by close friends and the loss of others, even family scars, linger and smart. It's a departure, in other words, from the nihilism of 'Minswell'- a track as wonderfully detached as the slurred read of its hook.
But the range was always there. 'Real Luv'- one of the first Slo-Be tracks I heard- was an early indicator of his ability to find the pockets in a pitched-up sample, and make something genuinely catchy in the process. Yet tonally it was a million miles away from Slo-Be's other tracks. 'Trife', also from 2019, was an early sketch of his environment's relentless cycles, '...still in the hood, still buying pounds, still buying these pounds...'. Slo-Be sounded almost regretful about being all in. It didn't detract from the venom of his delivery- the production on 'Nike' is as precarious as footsteps on a highwire but Slo-Be seems to have had that talent of rapping softly and fearlessly so that he never falls off it, and in the process ratchets up the tension to unbearable levels. Later in the catalogue, the words tumble out to completely different effect on 'Black Heart Dead Rose', where his lyrics seem filled with genuine frustration and bitterness.
His voice, in all of these tracks, compels you to listen. It was a voice that had so much more to say.

Back In Town: O.A. Zidan x Reader

Itâs been three years since Omar laid eyes on you, since the day he dropped you off at JFK airport. Â Youâd had to catch a flight back to Delaware in order to care for your father. Heâs thought about you often since then, wondering what youâre up to, how youâre doing.
When he sees you again at a crime scene in Brooklyn, he canât believe it. He had no idea you were back in New York. The Human Trafficking Task Force operates out of their Brooklyn-Queens residency, theyâve been called in because Omarâs case has developed into something unexpected. Back in the day thatâs where youâd been assigned, it looks like youâve returned to the position.
For a moment it feels like the world stands still. Your eyes meet and itâs like the past three years havenât happened. It comes back in a rush, all of those emotions chasing through his body, His feelings havenât changed, not really, heâs still as in love with you as he was the day he dropped you off at the airport.
You donât get a chance to talk, youâre busy interviewing the victims, reallocating them to the relevant resources. Part of your work is to ensure that each victim receives the support they deserve, in both an immediate and long-term capacity. This is the thing that you excel at, victim support. You have a dedication that goes far beyond the normal scope of any investigator heâs ever met. Your empathy is one of the reasons he fell in love with you in the first place, your ability to instil a sense of peace in the chaos that surrounds you.
It becomes a joint operation; you end up in the JOC discussing the details of the trafficking ring youâve been investigating over the past few months. The story you tell is harrowing, he can tell itâs made itâs mark on you, you wear it on your features as you describe the conditions that you found the girls in, some as young as eleven. It sickens every single one of them.
He catches up with you in the breakroom afterwards. Youâre trying to stifle a yawn behind your hand as you stir four sugars into your coffee mug. Â You usually take one.
âBurning the candle at both ends?â He asks as he picks up his own mug and decants coffee and hot water into it.
âIâve been on this case for the past thirty-six hours.â You tell him, rubbing the space between your eyes. âYour crime scene wasnât the first one Iâve been to in the past few days.â
It goes like that with human trafficking. If the smugglers get even the faintest inclination that theyâve been compromised, they move the stock or dispose of it.
âI didnât know you were back in the city.â He says quietly as he stirs in the creamer.
You lean against the worksurface alongside of him, your shoulder brushing against his.
âI got back a few months ago.â You say as you raise your mug to your lips. âI kept meaning to reach out, but things got a little busy.â
Omar knows how it works. Youâd come back to New York, hit the ground running. He knows you would have wanted to move on after Delaware, immerse yourself in the work. Itâs how you dealt with a lot of things.
âIâm sorry about your dad.â He says softly, studying your features.
He sees the sadness in you, youâve done well to hide it but the grief it clings to you like a well-worn coat.
âWe had a good couple of years together, but he declined quickly towards the end.â You shake your head as you clasp the mug to your chest. âItâs the nature of it you know?â
He does know, his uncle had died of the same thing not long before he met you. Heâd seen the toll the treatment took, how quickly things can change and go downhill. Thatâs why he never begrudged you leaving, he wanted you to have as much time with your father as you possibly could. His hand takes yours as he meets your eyes.
âI do know.â He says, his thumb tracing over the hollow of your wrist.
You give him a watery smile, squeezing his fingers before the door to the break room opens and you release it.
Youâre exhausted by the time case is over, itâs been over seventy-two hours and youâre running on fumes. He can see the weariness in you, itâs in the way you rub at your red-rimmed eyes, the single tap pf your finger on the keyboard as scroll through the report checking for errors. He knows what the aftermath is like, when the adrenaline leaks out of your body and the fatigue crashes in on you.
âLet me take you home.â He says, his hand coming to rest upon your shoulder, his thumb chasing over the nape of your neck. He massages that tense little knot between your shoulder blades, and you make that noise, the one he still hears in his dreams. âYouâre too tired to drive.â
He walks you to your apartment door, fingertips brushing yours as you walk side by side. That connection between the two of you, itâs still there thrumming just under the surface, the way it always has been.
When he steps into your apartment, he canât help but smile. The essence of your personality emanates from the walls, his fingertips run over the blanket thatâs folded over the back of the couch, the one your mother quilted. He remembers it draped over the bottom of your bed in the last place.
âCome to bed with me.â You say softly, your fingers entwining with his. âI know youâre tired too.â
Thereâs such tenderness in his gaze as you undress each other, his warm hands drawing the fabric from your form. His thumb chases over the line of your jaw.
âAll I want to do is to climb into bed and hold you.â He whispers as he looks into your eyes. âThe way that we used to.â
âI want that too.â You tell him.
When you get into bed, Omar wraps his arms around you and draws you close. He buries his face into the curve of your throat, inhaling the scent of nectarines that clings to your skin.
âIâve missed this.â He whispers as his lips ghost across your ear. âI missed you.â
